Temperature and Relative Humidity Conversion Table
for calibrating hygrometers. How to cure a humidor.
Steps
to Curing a Humidor
A humidor's proper moisture and temperature environment must
be created before attempting to store cigars, This is called "curing" a humidor.
According to Diamond Crown experts, here are the simple steps involved in this process.
- Remove and fill the humidity device with distilled water.
- With a fresh sponge, dampened with distilled water, thoroughly
wet the sides, top and bottom of the humidor interior.
- Leave the damp sponge in the humidor, resting on a plastic
bag. Make sure there is no direct contact between the sponge and humidor.
- Install the humidity element.
- Close the humidor overnight or for at least twelve hours.
- Open the humidor, remove the sponge and plastic bag.
- Close humidor again for an additional twelve hours, ensuring
the interior wood has a raised level of humidity prior to storing cigars.
- Your humidor is now ready to accept your cigars for storage.

Some cigar connoisseurs even have separate
humidors to "age" their premium cigars. Many prefer a humidor for each cigar's
country of origin, for example, the Dominican Republic or Honduras, allowing each cigar
brand to maintain it's own distinctive taste, aroma and aging process.
Surprisingly, a premium cigar investment is not lost if the cigars become dry due
to poor storage. Using a properly cured humidor, you can revive your dry cigars, however,
it will take considerably longer to revive them than it took to for them to dry.
Dry cigars should be revived slowly. First, place you cigars inside an open plastic
bag on the bottom level or drawer of your fully charged and running humidor for four days.
Next, remove the cigars from the plastic bag, keeping them at the bottom of your humidor
for another two days. Finally, move the cigars up from the bottom to the top level (or
drawer) of you humidor.
It will take approximately three to five weeks to revive your premium cigars to
proper smoking conditions.Over
Humidification: A common mistake in cigar preservation is over-humidification.
Some people falsely believe when storing cigars, if a little humidity is good, a lot is
better. Not true. Over-humidification will cause premium cigars to become soggy, wrinkled
and difficult to draw. To prevent this, monitor the humidity level of your humidor
maintaining the optimal 68% to 72% humidity. Many humidors, such as Diamond Crown and
Daniel Marshall are equipped with hygrometers which allow you to easily monitor the
humidity level in your humidor. |
Relative Humidity is the amount of moisture
air can hold at different temperatures.
These guidelines may be able to help you calibrate your hygrometer correctly.

1.)
Read the temperature in humidor.
2.) Find temperature in left column.
3.) Read RH next to this temperature.

EXAMPLE: 1.) You
read a humidor temp of 66.
2.) Find 66 in the left column.
3.) Read 80 % in the right column.
4.) This is the RH your hygrometer
should read to give you the same
humidification as 70 % RH @ 70.
You know your hygrometer reads 2 % low
so subtract 2 % from 80 %.
Your hygrometer should
read 78 % (at 66 ),when the true RH is 80 %. |
